Category explanation

Category D-

This is when a vehicle has been subject to an insurance total loss. Usually the logbook is available but on occasions that it is not, it can be applied for in the normal manner at the current cost £25.00.

Category C-

This is when a vehicle has been subject to an insurance total loss. Category C vehicles are usually required to have a VIC test; this was launched by the government for Category C vehicles that have been involved in an accident on or after 07 April 2003. Not all Category C vehicles need a VIC test, VIC test currently cost £38.00 and logbooks currently cost £25.00 you are only required to pay one fee or the other. If the vehicle needs a VIC test then you will be unable to obtain a logbook until the DVLA has received confirmation from the testing station that it has had and passed the test.

To find out whether a Category C vehicle needs a VIC check contact the following helpline number

0300 123 9000

You may not be aware that you are able to tax your vehicle as soon as you receive your VIC certificate in the usual manner. Your logbook will arrive in due course. In this instance the requirement for a logbook is replaced by a VIC certificate.
